College Has No Age Limit

westburyWestbury resident, Bob Breier isn’t letting his age slow him down. The 83-year-old is among the many seniors of Hofstra University’s Personal Enrichment in Retirement Program (PEIR) who are proving college doesn’t have an age limit.

Breier, a retired CPA and box manufacturer, joined PEIR seeking social camaraderie and to continue learning. As a member, he attends, as well as presents lectures on a variety of topics.

The lectures are what caught Breier’s attention 14 years ago when he was first introduced to the program by a friend.

“I fell in love with the lectures right away and I’ve been a member ever since. The knowledge in these classrooms is incredible,” he explained.

Breier’s experience as an Air Force officer during the Korean War helped him feel comfortable while speaking publicly for the first time at PEIR.

“During my first presentation I was nervous, but after I became very comfortable. I find them quite enjoyable and rewarding,” he explained.

Breier enjoys lecturing about topics that he is unfamiliar with, so he can teach others while teaching himself.

“I want to expand my horizons. I like to choose subjects that I’m unfamiliar with because I didn’t get to explore them while studying to become a CPA in college,” he said. “It is gratifying doing the research and studying.”

Socialization is Breier favorite aspect of PEIR. “I’ve met many friends here, and we go out to dinner, play tennis and meet outside of college frequently. My wife is not a member, but when we have a social meeting she comes along.”

Breier’s busy schedule at college keeps him occupied as a retiree.

“PEIR is a wonderful learning experience. I don’t have any free time, and it is great,” he said.

The PEIR program is for retirees ages 55 and older. To schedule a visit, call Bradley Kaye at 516-463-4824. The website is www.hofstra.edu/academics/ce/lifelonglearning/peir/
