The Garden City High School girls’ varsity track and field team competed at the 2009 Penn Relays at University of Pennsylvania on April 23 and 24.

The 4x800m relay team of Elizabeth Slattery, Emily Menges, Michelle Rotondo and Jenna DeAngelo qualified for the Championship of America, running a combined time of 9:11.90. The time was the fastest U.S. prep time at the Penn Relays and ranks them as holding the second-fastest time in the U.S. to date this year.

The girls finished in fourth place behind three Jamaican teams, setting a new Garden City High School record. As the top American team at the meet, the girls received solid gold watches.

The 4x400m team – Emily Menges, Taryn Schmelzinger, Catherine Cafaro and Taylor Hennig – also competed in the meet, winning their heat and just missing the school record. The team holds the record for the sixth fastest time in New York this season.
